Santa Is Coming To Town

By Ron Wong

"Making a list, checking it twice, going to find out who is naughty or nice, Santa Claus is coming to town."

It is that time of the year to make that list of fishing stuff you'd like to receive at Christmas. You're probably like most of us wanting the latest and newest equipment and tackle that is available now. So, it is always a good idea to make a list of what you'd like so you receive what you want or need instead of getting another pack of worms that you have a thousand already on the shelf. Since the 2018 Bassmaster Classic, ICAST and the Forrest Wood Cup, a lot of new tackle and equipment has hit the shelves. We at the MSHFN have had an opportunity to review and field test many of the items and we would like to suggest some of the items you'd like to receive this year.

2019 Lew's, KastKing and Phenix rods and reels

Many new rods and reels were introduced this year that set the bar for high quality performance. Starting with casting reels, a couple of them would step up your game are the Team Lew's Pro-Ti and the Shimano Curado DC. The Team Lew's Pro-Ti is the newest premium reel that Lew's has to offer. This reel features side plates with a titanium finish, 11 bearing system, 20 pounds of drag power, the Lew's patented Speed Dial line indicator and patented Speed Keeper hook keeper, along with much more features. The Shimano Curado DC reel incorporates a microcomputer to help prevent backlashes with its unique braking system. For an excellent performance reasonably priced spinning reel, there is the Team Lew's Custom Pro Speed Spin. This spinning reel is loaded with features such as 12 bearing system, C60 carbon skeletal rotor, Winn Dri-Tac knobs on the handle and much more. Another new affordable spinning reel which has just come onto the market is the Kast King Speed Demon. This reel has a 7.2.1 gear ratio and incorporates 10 bearings. Several of the new casting rods you may like for Christmas are Lew's Custom Plus Super Grip Speed Stick or the Phenix Feather rod. The Team Lew's Pro-Ti rod features LFS-X5 graphite blanks, soft touch graphite skeletal reel seat, exclusive Vibration Transfer Ring (VTR) and much more. The Lew's Custom Plus Super Grip rod features a full Dri-Tac handle that is flat on top, so the rod will not torque to either side and has the Vibration Transfer Ring incorporated. The Phenix Feather series casting rods are some of the lightest rods on the market and are offered at a very reasonable price. These rods have a carbon fiber reel seat and much more.

New lures for 2019 from Strike King, Z-man and Queen Tackle

Many of the fishing lure companies added new sizes and colors to existing lines of lures. A couple of new lures for 2018/2019 are the Strike King Deep 1.5 crankbait, Strike King KVD Mega Dawg, Z-man Jack Hammer and the Queen Tackle tungsten jig. The Strike King Deep 1.5 crankbait is a deep diving square bill bait that will deflect off cover much like a normal square bill crankbait. The new Mega KVD Dawg is a 6 - inch walking style top water bait that is very easy to use. The Z-man Jack Hammer is a premium vibrating jig that will begin vibrating as soon as it hits the water. Queen Tackle offers tungsten head jigs in both the flipping and football style heads. The tungsten heads offer better sensitivity then lead headed jigs.

"Must Have" accessories featuring Millennium Marine seats, Huk rain gear, Erupt Rod Threading Device (RTD) and the Hook-Pal soft bait keeper

Some accessories and other equipment that would be nice to receive are:

Erupt RTD (Rod Threading Device), Millennium Marine boat seats, Hook-Pal fishing tool, and Orion Coolers. The Erupt RTD will help you thread your fishing line onto your rods while never missing an eye and cutting threading time by 80 per cent. For the crappie fisherman that threads a 14-foot fishing pole, this will eliminate a lot of aggravation. Millennium Marine now offers an affordable comfortable boat seat. Due to the mesh style construction water will evaporate in a matter of minutes when they get wet. The Hook-Pal fishing tool will help save soft plastics by utilizing a small plastic disc, which is applied easily and used by many professional fishermen. Orion Coolers are made in Tennessee and are offered in 25, 35, 45, 55, 65 and 85-quart sizes. They can be customized with a myriad of accessories and has unsurpassed ice retention capabilities. The easy-to-use lid latch is a first in the industry. A good packable rain suit makes a nice gift and the Huk packable jacket and pant is a very good affordable choice.

2019 crappie and panfish products that will help "fill the freezer"

For the crappie fishermen, there are some new products that will help you catch more fish. B 'n' M Poles has a couple of new crappie rods out -- The Tree Thumper by Steve Danna and the Russ Bailey Signature rods. Both rods are excellent jigging poles that will help hoist the slabs out of cover. From HH Reels, the new Cyclone line counter reel is a low-profile reel great for long-lining or trolling. They also have a new light weight spinning reel in the 500 or 1000 size, which are both very smooth. Bobby Garland has just introduced the Slab Hunt'R which is 2- inch double-tail bait that can be used several different ways. Bobby Garland has several new colors in their complete line of crappie baits. Check them out at www.bobbygarlandcrappie.com. Slime Line now offers a new panfish fishing line that will work well on the smaller spinning reels. The low memory in the line will help prevent backlashes.

As you make your list, don't forget to include size, color and model numbers where applicable. Now, you will hopefully get what you'd like for Christmas.
